Dioecious seeds are industrial hemp seeds with a low THC content (below 0.3%). Growing industrial hemp is legal in Poland, and seeds of certified varieties can be bought and sold legally. Varieties of Cannabis sativa L. listed in the EU catalogue of varieties with a THC content below 0.3% are approved for cultivation, and the crop itself must be registered with KOWR.
These varieties are grown mainly as a raw material for the textile, construction, food and cosmetics industries. Legal hemp varieties are becoming increasingly popular in Poland and abroad, and growing them is a sustainable, environmentally friendly form of agriculture.
Hemp comes in two types: monoecious and dioecious. In monoecious varieties, male and female flowers develop on the same plant, so the plants pollinate themselves and the crop ripens evenly. In dioecious varieties, male and female flowers grow on separate plants, which pollinate each other. Both types are used, among other things, to produce textiles, oil and building materials. They differ not only in the way they are pollinated, but also in their morphological characteristics and slightly different growing requirements, which is worth considering when choosing a variety.
Dioecious hemp is used mainly in industry - it is grown for fibre, straw and seed. Dioecious varieties are usually taller and produce more biomass than monoecious ones, which makes them well suited to fibre-oriented crops.
